چکیده
The Atlantic sea scallop, Placopecten magellanicus, is a bivalve mollusc that occurs along the Atlantic seaboard of North America. It is commercially exploited and in many areas has sustained an important fishery for more than 60 years (1). Recently it has been targeted as a potential species for aquaculture (2). The 18S rRNA sequence presented below represents the first complete molluscan sequence of this gene. DNA was extracted as in (3) from the adductor muscle of a specimen collected from

Postingestive selection in the sea scallop, Placopecten magellanicus (Gmelin): the role of particle size and density.
Suspension-feeding bivalves can influence the energy value of their food supply by particle selection at various stages from particle clearance to production of feces. Previous workers have found that some bivalve species (Mercenaria mercenaria, Mytilus edulis) are capable of postingestive selection within the stomach. Few studies, however, have attempted to isolate the factors that influence p...
متن کاملIdentifying patterns of dispersal, connectivity and selection in the sea scallop, Placopecten magellanicus, using RADseq‐derived SNPs
Understanding patterns of dispersal and connectivity among marine populations can directly inform fisheries conservation and management. Advances in high-throughput sequencing offer new opportunities for estimating marine connectivity. We used restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing to examine dispersal and realized connectivity in the sea scallop Placopecten magellanicus, an economically im...
متن کاملA comparative phylogenetic analysis of Theileria spp. by using two two "18S ribosomal RNA" and "Theileria annulata merozoite surface antigen" gene sequences
More than 185 species, strains and unclassified Theileria parasites are categorized in the Entrez Taxonomy. The accurate diagnosis and proper identification of the causative agents are important for understanding the epidemiology, prevention and appropriate treatment. This study aims to discuss the importance of two genes of Theileria annulata 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) and Theileria annulata...
متن کاملAn Integrated Assessment Model for Helping the United States Sea Scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) Fishery Plan Ahead for Ocean Acidification and Warming
Ocean acidification, the progressive change in ocean chemistry caused by uptake of atmospheric CO2, is likely to affect some marine resources negatively, including shellfish. The Atlantic sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) supports one of the most economically important single-species commercial fisheries in the United States. Careful management appears to be the most powerful short-term fa...
متن کاملMeat Composition and Quality Assessment of King Scallops (Pecten maximus) and Frozen Atlantic Sea Scallops (Placopecten magellanicus) on a Retail Level
An enlarged range of scallop products on the market allows the consumer to buy lower priced alternatives, which often raises the question of quality and control. Frozen meat of king scallops (Pecten maximus) and Atlantic sea scallops (Placopecten magellanicus) were purchased on the German market and compared with fresh shell-on king scallops of various origin. The approximate composition, inclu...
